iPhone travel photography has changed the way I travel. When I know I can quickly capture the moments that catch my eye, I’m free to enjoy the experience instead of worrying about camera settings.
Let me explain. I still travel with my DSLR, but having my iPhone camera with me has given me speed and versatility when I need it. And the quality of the photos is amazing! The only problem is… it takes much longer to choose my favorite photos now!
A few days after I returned home from our European cruise this summer, I sat down to choose my favorite photos, which were in several places. My iPhone shots were all in my Photos app on my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro, and I didn’t have to download them. But I did need to download the photos from my Canon to Lightroom Classic. That was easy, due to my preset in LR.
So the downloading wasn’t the time consumer.
Instead, I had a wonderful problem. 😍 Every photo took me back to the moment I pressed the shutter! I could remember where I was, who I was with, the sounds around me and even the smells in the air. I remembered the excitement of discovering something unexpected and the joy of seeing a place with fresh eyes.
In a way, I wasn’t just looking at photos. I was taking the trip all over again. And part of that was due to the spontaneity of shooting with my iPhone. When I knew I could quickly capture the moments that caught my eye, I was free to enjoy the experience instead of worrying about camera settings.
The Best Travel Photos Tell Stories
When people think about travel photography, they often picture famous landmarks. Those are what I call the hero shots, and they’re wonderful to have.
But when I look back through my pictures, it’s usually the unexpected moments that bring the strongest memories flooding back. Sometimes it’s a beautiful detail, sometimes it’s an unexpected surprise, and sometimes it’s simply the way the light looked at the end of the day. (That was especially true in Iceland!)
Those are the moments that make a trip unforgettable.
Notice the Details with iPhone Travel Photography
This summer, Pope Leo visited Barcelona to bless the Tower of Jesus Christ at the Basilica of the Sagrada Família. We were scheduled to be at the Basilica on the same day.
Needless to say, we needed to find another way to experience the artistry of Antoni Gaudí. So we visited the Casa Batlló, which was originally built by one of Gaudí’s architecture professors. When Josep Batlló purchased the house in 1903, he hired Gaudí to rebuild it.
It was quite the renovation! Walking through the house, I wasn’t planning to photograph every room. There were other tourists, and the lighting was challenging.
But then I noticed this beautiful wooden door. Its flowing curves immediately caught my eye, and then I learned that the diagonal wooden slats on the lower sides could actually slide to open, letting fresh air into the house. Gaudí wasn’t just creating something beautiful. He was solving a problem in an elegant and imaginative way. I wanted a photo to remember it by, so I had to shoot quickly when people moved out of the way for a moment. And the lighting was dim. My iPhone was hanging by my side and took this incredible shot. (Quick tip. Turn off the flash! The newer iPhones handle dim light really well.)
Sometimes the best travel photos aren’t of the famous sights. They’re the details that make you stop and wonder.
Stay Curious

One of the biggest surprises of our trip was finding geese living in the cloister of Barcelona Cathedral. Our guide explained that there are traditionally thirteen geese in honor of Saint Eulàlia, who was thirteen years old when she died. At one time, the geese had also served as burglar alarms, and even today, they aren’t replaced one at a time because they form strong bonds with one another.
I loved the story almost as much as the geese themselves. And yes…I couldn’t help smiling at the little pigeon trying his best to fit in with the big guys. 🤣
Curiosity often leads to the memories we treasure most.
It’s Easy to Capture the Unexpected with iPhone Travel Photography

We had no idea we’d arrive just after the Corpus Christi celebration, but the floral decorations were still surrounding the fountain in the cathedral courtyard, transforming an already beautiful space into something magical. On top of that… 😉 there was an egg dancing on top of the water, spraying out of the fountain.
It was one of those moments you simply can’t plan.
Travel has a wonderful way of rewarding us with unexpected surprises if we’re paying attention.
Slow Down Long Enough to Notice the Light

Not every memorable travel photo comes from sightseeing. Some even come from simply sitting with a glass of wine in the evening.
One evening on our ship, the low, warm sunlight poured through the windows, filling the space at the Pool Bar with a beautiful golden glow. The orange light inside contrasted perfectly with the blue ocean outside, and a waiter happened to walk into the frame just as I quickly took the picture.
But the best surprise happened when I got home and was enjoying my photos. Do you notice anything strange about that glass door to the left of the bar? That’s right… The doorway seems to continue through the table. That’s because the lower half isn’t a doorway at all. It’s a reflection.
Photography has a wonderful way of showing us things we didn’t even realize we had seen.
Look Up

As we walked into the Central Market in València, Spain, my eyes were immediately drawn upward.
Instead of looking at the colorful produce first, I found myself admiring the beautiful stained-glass window and soaring architecture above the busy shoppers.
It’s a reminder that beauty isn’t only found in famous landmarks.
Sometimes it’s hiding in everyday places, just waiting for someone to notice.
Why I Love iPhone Travel Photography
After years of traveling with my Canon camera, I still love using it. But I’ve also come to appreciate something else. When I’m carrying my iPhone, I’m always ready.
I don’t have to decide whether to bring a camera, I don’t have to miss a moment because my gear isn’t nearby, and when something catches my eye, I simply raise my phone and capture it.
Then I go right back to enjoying the experience.
That’s what iPhone travel photography has given me. Not just better pictures but also better memories!
